Tennessee Trojans Expectations

Expectations are imperative for three important reasons.

  1. Expectations provide broad goals for baseball related performance, both in practice and game situations.
  2. They serve as guidelines for behavior with respect to interactions with teammates, coaches, umpires, opponents, parents and their personal behavior both on and off the field.
  3. Expectations provide structure, predictability and standards that are essential for promoting positive interactions, personal growth and achieving common goals.

Trojans Coaches Expectations

Let me begin with what we want to accomplish, and that is to help each player become the best version of themselves on and off the field. Through baseball players, can develop skills that can transfer over to life skills that will help them navigate their growth and development.

This will require mental strength, dealing with pressure situations, learning the correct approach to different situational problems, and to take responsibility and deal both with failure and success.

To be able to achieve this, these young athletes will have to understand what is expected of them as a member of the Tennessee Trojans Baseball Team, which is:

  • Hustle & Effort – For a young athlete to develop and improve their skills it requires them to do their best. That means, “HUSTLE ON THE FIELD” and “HUSTLE OFF THE FIELD”. I expect each player to Show an Effort in everything they do (Colossians 3:23-24). This includes practices and game situations.
    • Players will have to earn playing time by demonstrating their Hustle and Effort.
    • That being said, we guarantee each player will play 50% of the time.
  • Teamwork and Relationships – Be a good teammate, pick each other up and support each other, keep each other accountable. By fostering teammate relationships, it builds both individual and team self-confidence and team unity.
  • Leadership and Role Modelling – How each player interacts with others can contribute to the growth and skill development of that child, or it can plant seeds of self-doubt and insecurity. I expect everyone on the team to be a positive role model no matter what their skill level is. This is how sportsmanship and leadership qualities are born. Demonstrating good sportsmanship qualities both in winning and losing helps shape the character of young athletes.
    • If the coaches feel the player is hindering others he will be asked to sit out and may be sent home.
    • There is a time to joke around and have fun (i.e. When someone is in the cage and they are trying to hit, is not a time to joke around.
  • Fair Play and Respect – Young athletes need to learn the importance of playing by the rules and exhibiting fair play during games. Learning and showing respect for teammates, coaches, umpires, opponents, and parents, as well as refraining from unsportsmanlike behavior builds character and develops integrity that goes far beyond the baseball diamond into all aspects of their lives. We are not just teaching baseball, we are trying to develop life skills, and baseball is a great way to learn those skills.
  • Development – Our goal is to get each player ready to compete at the next level both physically and mentally (improve their Baseball IQ), plus provide Maximum Exposure through Tournaments to showcase each players abilities to potential college and professional recruiting scouts.
To accomplish this, practices are an important and necessary part of becoming a better baseball player and we expect each player to not just attend practices but also put forward their best efforts to listen, learn and grow.
Practices include the fundamentals for: throwing; proper hitting; fielding; and base running. To help players achieve their dreams, we provide each one with an individual assessment, strategies and goals for success. I expect every member of the team to practice and work hard on improving their skill levels in each category.
